Ford Explorer Specs & Towing Capacity

The Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds when properly equipped. The available 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine can help provide the Explorer with that kind of power. This engine offers a capable and fun drive with up to 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

While the Explorer offers several engines, each one is prepared to haul heavy cargo. The standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine gets up to 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This engine provides a towing capacity of 5,300 pounds with the right equipment. This engine also comes equipped with Auto Start-Stop Technology, which’ll help you save on fuel by turning the engine off when your vehicle has come to a complete stop.

There’s even a powerful hybrid option. The available 3.3L V6 Hybrid powertrain features 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. That makes this efficient SUV capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Plus, the quiet hybrid includes a built-in Pedestrian Alert Sounder.

Ford Explorer Trailering Features

Ford Explorer TrailerThe available Trailer Tow Package-Class III gives your SUV the ability to safely tow everything from a few dirt bikes to a heavy trailer. This package provides features, such as:

  • Class III frame-mounted trailer hitch receiver: A frame-mounted hitch ensures your trailer will be secure.
  • Engine oil cooler: This will ensure your engine won’t overheat while hauling a heavy-duty load.
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Trailer Coverage: This system helps you change lanes safely, even when you’ve got a big boat behind you.

There are also lots of additional features available that’ll make towing even easier. For example, trailer sway control comes standard on each Explorer trim level. This system monitors your cargo and uses corrective braking to keep your trailer stable and in line with your SUV.

Hooking your cargo up is easier too. The standard rear-view camera lets you see what’s directly behind your SUV using your dashboard monitor. With the available 360-Degree camera with split-view, you’ll have an even better view of your trailer when you’re trying to reverse or park.

Performance Technologies

Ford Explorer TechWhen you hit the road in your 2021 Explorer, you’ll always be confident in its performance capabilities. The Explorer comes standard with rear-wheel drive to enhance towing abilities and overall performance.

If you choose the available Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System™, you’ll gain Hill Descent Control™ and a total of seven selectable drive modes. Some of these drive modes include:

  • Deep Snow/Sand
  • Eco
  • Sport
  • Trail
  • Slippery

There’s also a Tow/Haul drive mode that’ll work to reduce transmission shift frequency and provide engine braking to help keep your trailer under control when driving downhill.

The Ford Explorer also comes standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission, providing a fun and smooth ride wherever you go.

2021 Explorer: Safety Features

Ford Explorer SafetyEach trim level of the Ford Explorer comes standard with a number of safety technologies. Thanks to Ford Co-Pilot360™, you’ll enjoy features, such as:

  • Pre-Collison Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Auto High-Beam Headlamps
  • BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert

Choose the available Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ system for additional convenient technology. This suite includes Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, which can keep you at a preset speed while using Speed Sign Recognition and Lane Centering to keep you safe. Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ also has Evasive Steering Assist and Voice-Activated Navigation.

Check out available Active Park Assist 2.0 and Reverse Brake Assist for extra help while parking. Next time you’re struggling to squeeze into a tight spot or perfect that parallel park, your Ford Explorer can help you out.

Ford Explorer Cargo Capabilities

Ford Explorer CargoThere are lots of ways to load up the 2021 Ford Explorer. If you’ve got a boat or camper hitched to your SUV, you can strap a set of skis or a couple kayaks to the available roof racks. Plus, the Explorer even has convenient step pads inside the rear doors to make it easier for you when loading cargo on the roof.

However, with all this interior cargo space, you might not even need to store gear on the roof!

The trunk features 18.2 cubic feet of cargo room. When you fold the third row flat, you’ll have 47.9 cubic feet of cargo volume—you can access that by pressing a button with the available PowerFold® third-row seats. To load even more items, you can fold the second row down too, and make up to 87.8 cubic feet of cargo volume.

If you get the available Cargo Management System, you’ll have a reversable load floor, under-floor storage, and extra pockets on the sides to make storing your supplies as easy as possible.

Need a balance between cargo room and passenger space? The second row has a 35/30/35 split-fold-flat bench seat and with E-Z entry second-row seating. With this setup, you can find the ideal configuration that gives you plenty of room to fit everyone and everything.

A hands-free foot activated liftgate is also available to make packing up easier. Instead of fumbling for your keys, you can just hold your foot in front of a sensor and the trunk will open for you.
