2021 Ford Explorer Performance

2020 Ford Explorer Performance Specs

To understand Ford Explorer fuel economy, it’s best to understand the engines the Explorer offers and what they’re capable of. Standard on the entry-level edition of this SUV, as well as the XLT trim, and the Limited trim, is the all-around performer, the 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-cylinder. This versatile engine includes twin-scroll turbocharger technology, cast-aluminum pistons, and functionality that lifts output during gear changes.

It may be an entry-level engine, but it produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Considering more power? You may want to upgrade to the 3.0L V6. From highway merges to passing on a 2-lane straightaway, this is the engine you want by your side. The EcoBoost® V6 produces 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, while the enhanced version of this V6 puts out 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. You’ll feel power under the hood of the Explorer, no matter which engine you choose!

Let’s look at those side by side.

Ford Explorer Fuel Efficiency

2020 Ford Explorer MPG

For a powerful SUV that has capable engines, the Ford Explorer provides some outstanding fuel economy. The entry-level engine, with rear-wheel drive, gets an EPA-estimated 21 city/28 highway/24 combined MPG, while the AWD edition puts out an EPA-estimated 20 city/27 highway/23 combined MPG. Thanks to this engine, you’ll also be able to tow up to 5,300 pounds, enough for a medium-size trailer or boat.

The EcoBoost® V6 engine, an engine that’s only available with 4WD, checks in at an EPA-estimated 18 city/24 highway/20 combined MPG. Thanks to the V6, you’ll get increased towing power, up to 5,600 pounds.

The Capable Ford Explorer

The 2021 Ford Explorer is equipped with rear-wheel drive, which helps to make the most of your drives. Rear-wheel drive enables more athletic and sporty design, and improved capability both on and off the pavement, whether you’re hitting dusty trails or blazing a path down the highway.

Any adventure can be boosted by the Terrain Management System™, which includes up to seven driving modes. The easy-to-use dial found in the center console allows you to find the right driving mode, whether you want that extra boost in the summer or more traction in the winter.

Some of these modes include:

  • Normal
  • Trail
  • Deep Snow/Sand
