Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500

Ford F-150

Ithaca, Elmira, and Cortland drivers seeking that next full-size pickup truck know there are many options currently available. Which one is the right fit for you? You have to consider performance, towing capabilities, interior amenities, and bed functionality, among other attributes.

Let the Maguire Ford team assist you. We’ve created this 2020 Ford F-150 vs. Ram 1500 comparison to help you understand the key differences (and similarities) between these two trucks, so you’re able to make the right decision about your next vehicle.

Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500 Performance

Ford F-150 Performance SpecsWhether you’re using it for work or for a fun weekend getaway, you want that powerful performance when pressing down on the accelerator. A 6-engine lineup powers the F-150, with a 10-speed automatic transmission standard with the EcoBoost®, V8, and diesel engines.

The Ram 1500, powerful in its own right, comes standard with a 3.6L V6 engine that delivers 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The F-150 entry-level engine is also a V6, delivering 290 horsepower on every drive.

What you get with the F-150 that you don’t get with the Ram 1500 is choice. With six different engines to select from, there are more ways to customize your drive, as the Ram 1500 only has three. The most powerful gas F-150 engine makes 470 lb-ft of torque, far outpacing the 410 lb-ft of torque offered by the most powerful Ram gas engine.

F-150 vs Ram 1500 Towing Capability

When the 3.5L EcoBoost® twin-turbo V6 is under the hood of the Ford F-150, you’ll have an engine that can deliver 470 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, tow up to 13,200 pounds with the F-150, so feel free to bring your boat, trailer, or ATVs out for a ride. Great way to spend a weekend, right?

The available 5.7L HEMI® V8 engine in the Ram 1500 offers a max towing capacity of 12,750 pounds, powerful towing capability, but not quite what the F-150 can tow.

Ford F-150 Towing  Ford F-150 Cargo

Want to haul more than the competition? The Ford F-150 lets you do so, with a max available payload of 3,270 pounds. When you have the available 5.0L V8 engine and Heavy-Duty Payload Package, the F-150 steps up to the plate with this standout payload capability. The F-150 also includes:

  • Standard lockable tailgate
  • Available remote tailgate release
  • Available LED cargo box lighting
  • Available stowable bed extender

With its max payload of 2,300 pounds, the Ram 1500 is a bit off the pace of what the Ford F-150 is capable of, which is something you’ll want to take into account when buying your next truck.

F-150 vs Ram 1500 Towing Tech and Safety

Ford F-150 Towing TechnologyBoth trucks do come with available towing technology, including blind spot protection. The Blind Spot Information System with Trailer Coverage in the F-150 lets you know when a car is alongside the trailer or in your blind spot. Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path and Automatic Trailer Detection protects you in the Ram 1500.

Several additional safety features stand out. Even though you hope to never use some of these safety features, know that they are working to protect you at all times. In the F-150, the Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking scans the road ahead. If a collision is possible, the brakes will apply automatically. This system is designed to only activate when needed.

The Lane-Keeping System, standard on several F-150 trims, can help you at a moment’s notice. If you begin to drift from the lane you’re in, it will direct you back to the lane with steering wheel torque guiding you back.

In the Ram 1500, you’ll have the available LaneSense® Lane Departure Warning Plus feature. Cameras work to identify lines on the road, determining where you are. If movement towards either detected line occurs, you’ll be warned to guide the truck back to the lane in a safe manner.

You’ll also find available Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking in the Ram 1500, which incorporates grade braking to help control the transmission. You’ll know if you’ve gotten too close to a preceding vehicle, and receive a warning if this is the case.

Trucks Putting You In Control

Ford F-150 InteriorBoth the F-150 and Ram 1500 can be equipped with comfortable vinyl seats and basic touchscreens, though there are more luxurious leather seats available on higher trims. The F-150 offers Single, Extended, and Crew Cab configurations, but the Ram 1500 has dropped the single cab offering in its recent redesign, leaving the Extended and Crew Cab options to choose from.

Both trucks do offer smartphone capability via Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, which can help you get through a workday or a weekend getaway. Make a phone call, choose your next song, or navigate safely to your destination using your favorite navigation app. It’s all possible thanks to the smartphone capability in your truck.

With in-truck Wi-Fi, you’ll stay connected while on the go, too. You can browse the internet, posting videos, and seeing who’s interacting with your selfies while you’re at your favorite campsite. With FordPass Connect featuring 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, the antenna can allow you to connect up to 10 devices at once, whether you’re inside the F-150 or up to 50 feet away. The Ram 1500 also carries Wi-Fi hotspot capability, so take advantage of your technology in a whole new way.
