Different Options of Achieving MPG

Ford Ranger MPG

As seen above, the Ford Ranger is a powerful vehicle, and this is evident from its MPG ratings. With the standard engine, it can achieve an EPA-estimated 21 city/26 highway/23 combined MPG. A great output for those drivers who take the long way round.

However, the Ford Ranger also has two additional setups, offering different MPG ratings. While the above rating was for the 2x4 configuration, the available 4x4 option achieves an EPA-estimated 20 city/24 highway/22 combined MPG.

The 4x4 option is meant for drivers who need that extra power and traction out on the roads less taken. Even some worksites may require it, especially when you’re dealing with adverse weather conditions.

The remaining option is the Tremor Off-Road package, which has been designed for a specific type of driving. When equipped with this package, the Ford Ranger reaches an EPA-estimated 19 city/19 highway/19 combined MPG

What Factors Can Impact MPG?

Ford Ranger MPG

There are numerous factors that can contribute to your vehicle not achieving its estimated MPG. Some of these may be due to environmental conditions or from the wear on the vehicle, which we’ll explain next.

When properly equipped, the Ranger has an incredible towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. While a great feature, you should be mindful of the fact that hauling large amounts of cargo may put a strain on the engine, among other parts of the vehicle. While towing, the fuel economy might have a slight decrease.

Additionally, you’ve also got to consider the impact of the payload. When properly configured, the maximum payload is 1,860 pounds. Much like how towing larger weights pulls from the MPG, so too can adding weight to the cargo space. This becomes a mini balancing act, getting maximum fuel efficiency while hauling your supplies.

Next, we come to environmental conditions. If a blizzard hits and brings your commute to a crawl, your fuel efficiency will dip as you wait. Same with harsher conditions which might call for you to drive more aggressively, thus impacting the fuel economy of your vehicle.
